Here's a sneak peek of one of my pieces for the Comic-Con International: San Diego art show next week. It's called Dragon Princess and is acrylic on obsidian. The finished piece is triple matted and shadowbox framed, with the inside edge of the frame measuring 16x 25 inches. This Princess is out for a nice starlit ride.
The Comic-Con art show is open to the public in the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The convention itself is long sold out, but there's lots to do all around that part of town. Starting today, July 10, 2026, I will have artwork in two convention art shows. I've posted a sneak peek of a small original from each display. It's hot pretty much everywhere right now, so attending an air conditioned convention sounds perfect to me!
Shore Leave started out as a Star Trek convention, but evolved into "a celebration of all forms of sci-fi/fantasy and brings in guests from popular TV shows and movies." There's a lot to do, and there are lots of super guests. There's stargazing, gaming, a masquerade and plenty of opportunity to meet the guests and pros. It's located in Lancaster, PA. I sent a variety of original pieces and prints to Shore Leave's art show, including the small black unicorn pictured below. It's acrylic on a piece of chrysanthemum jasper. I carried the design of the flower patterns in the stone onto the unicorn's trappings. Carousel fanatic that I am, there's some influence there, too, of course. I titled the piece Chrysanthemum... not a huge leap of imagination on my part for that title. The finished piece is triple matted and shadow box framed and suitably gemmed. I sent several other originals and an assortment of prints, too.
InConJunction is in Indianapolis, IN and is celebrating its 45th year. Panels! Guests! Dance party! Cosplay contest! Gaming! Much much more! Sounds fun! You can learn more here: https://inconjunction.org/
The sneak peek I'm showing here is a portrait of a snow leopard. It's a very small acrylic piece on turkey feather. It's inspired by the colors on the hybrid domestic turkey feather since they reminded me some of snow leopard colors. Plus I really like snow leopards. I remember seeing my first one in person at the San Francisco Zoo way back in the stone age when I was young, and it really made an impression that has stayed with me.
I hope everyone has a good weekend, attending a convention or not. I'm busy painting and framing pieces for Comic Con International- San Diego, which is coming up fast, and am spending time defending my vegetable garden against a particularly pesky squirrel, which earlier this week wiped out my nascent butternut squash crop. At least it could have finished one little squashling before taking bites out of the next!
I better get back to work because those pieces aren't going to paint or frame themselves.

It really is hard to believe that it's July, already. This year seems to be flying by.
CONvergence celebrates science fiction and fantasy in all media. It has a great lineup of guests, artists, authors, musicians, costuming, gaming, parties, vendors, panels and more. There's even a cinema room and book swap.
This year, I sent a selection of original art and prints to the art show, including the two pieces featured here as unframed sneak peeks. Of course they are triple matted and shadow box framed for the art show. Oak Dragon Flies is acrylic on petrified wood, the color of which inspired the butterfly winged dragon's colors. I knew what I wanted to do with this piece of stone when I first picked it up in January, and now I did it and off it's flown to Minneapolis!
Forest Town plays on a theme I revisit every time I want to get really bogged down in detail. There's a way to get to every level. Would I want to live there in real life? Probably not unless I could fly. But part of me must live there in my fantasy life, because I keep returning to the idea. But only when I have the inclination to get really really compulsively noodly with the brushwork. This piece is acrylic on stone also.

I will be spending the weekend of the 4th painting and also cooking. BBQ, potato salad and Southern style banana pudding for dessert rounds out the menu. And some veggies and dip, but I'm working on eating those already.

LibertyCon 38 is being held in the fine city of Chattanooga, TN, starting tomorrow, June 26, 2026 and running through the 28th. This is a fun convention... I got to go as artist guest some years back and had a blast. They've got a stellar guest list and have plenty of things to do, so I'm sure that a good time will be had by all. The piece that I sent is called "Evening Patrol," and it depicts the dragon rider protectors of a castle perched on a rocky island at sea. It's acrylic on stone. The arch in the island probably has something to do with my home area in Utah. Geology does some weird things here, so I imagine it would in fantasy realms also. I did paint a landing pad atop a tower to facilitate landing for the dragons, otherwise they'd have to grab hold of a tower or something and that probably wouldn't be fun for the riders. The finished piece is triple matted and framed, and each dragon has a gem.

The featured piece that I sent is titled "A Good Book." It features an avid dragon reader enjoying a book. It's acrylic on mahogany obsidian, which I used to give the piece an autumn feel. It's triple matted and framed with a gem accent for the dragon.
I have to cut this short because two of my cats are having a stand off and I'm worried somekitty will run across the keyboard again and mess up my post. Notice I say "again." It happened once today already..... darn hotkeys.

Coming up this weekend, I will have artwork in the art show at Balticon 60 in Baltimore, MD! I sent a selection of original artwork and prints including the two pieces featured in a sneak peek in this post, shown before they were matted, bejeweled and framed. One features a very proud silver dragon posing just for you on a moonlight promontory painted on silver sheep obsidian. the other is a small piece in acrylic on feather featuring the Golden Bird out of Russian faerie tales. I kind of went nuts gemming the bird, so each of the large eye feathers has a citrine cabochon on the finished piece. I sent a lot more, but you'll have to be there to see it because the scans are stuck somewhere in Barry's computer.
Balticon runs this year from May 22-25. There will be cosplay, music, gaming, a film festival, a charity auction, a dealer's room, artists alley, the already mentioned art show and of course lots of great programming. Demicon is a great con with costuming, a dealers room, guests, panels and more with the ever awesome Tadao Tomomatsu as toastmaster. Music! Parties! Anime! Authors! Artists! Hooray!
